We Have A Vacuum That Really Stinks Badly When Turned On- Any Suggestions On Possible Remedies?

Of course, buying a new vacuum is one possible answer- but we would like to avoid that if we can.
Sorry, I don’t know the specs on the vacuum. It is just a regular vacuum cleaner that uses bags.
It has a bad odor when turned on.
Can we clean the vacuum somehow- if we cleaned it and changed the bag, would that remedy this problem?
